Nigerian Police Boost Capabilities in Tackling SGBV Through Strategic Training

In a proactive move to address the escalating challenges of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Oron, men of the Nigeria Police converged at the Oron Divisional Police Station on Tuesday March 5, 2024 for a specialized training session spearheaded by the Centre for Young People Development and Poverty Alleviation Initiative (CYPAN), in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Gender Based Violence Management Committee and the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Department of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Justice. The focus of the training was on enhancing their capacity in effectively policing of SGBV cases and understanding the legal intricacies associated with the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law.

Mr. Robert Boniface, the Executive Director of the Centre for Young People Development and Poverty Alleviation Initiative, voiced his concerns over the rising incidence of SGBV in Oron and the resultant menace to the community. Recognizing the urgency for a comprehensive approach to prevent sexual violence, ensure safety, and provide robust support for survivors, Mr. Boniface emphasized the need for collective action. He extended gratitude to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Nelly Matis, and the entire Nigeria Police Force for their dedicated efforts in combatting SGBV.

Barrister Eno Jacob, representing the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Department of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Justice, delivered a comprehensive lecture to the officers. The session covered crucial aspects, including the Dynamics of SGBV, the Legal Framework Outlined in the VAPP Law, Best Practices in Investigating SGBV Cases, and Victim Support Services. Emphasis was placed on fostering collaboration with stakeholders for more effective policing in the ongoing battle against SGBV.

In response, the DPO expressed gratitude to CYDPAN and its partners for organizing such a timely and invaluable training program for the Nigeria Police. The DPO highlighted the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in ensuring the force remains well-equipped to handle the challenges posed by SGBV, reinforcing the commitment to safeguarding the community.

The initiative signifies a joint effort between law enforcement and advocacy organizations to fortify the response to SGBV, ultimately aiming for a safer and more secure environment for the residents of Oron.
